Hily asked its 5 000 single users from the U.S. if it's hard for them to take initiative and why.
We waste so much time and energy trying to guess why our crush is not making the first move. Hily wanted to put an end to this. We asked our users why they sometimes hesitate to text first. Are they afraid? Or do they have any other reasons?
Here are some pretty unexpected things we've discovered.
People Are Not That Scared To Take First Steps
We were surprised to find out that only 18% of women and 14% of men find it really scary to text their crush first.
40% of men and 27% of women said they usually feel very confident about it and can text anybody.
However, confidence of the majority depends on certain circumstances.
What Are Those Circumstances?
They REALLY Like You
That’s not an eye-opener. 53% of men and even more — 57% of women will definitely text someone first if they are truly INTO them. Rest assured, people who are interested will find a way to talk to their crush.
They Are Not Afraid To Be Turned Down
21% of women and 24% of men won’t text their crush until they know for sure that they like them back.
They Know How To Approach Their Crush
17% of both men and women won’t text first if they’ve never talked to you before.
It’s Not You, It’s Me
Lots of personal insecurities often get in the way of taking initiative. 77% of women and 54% of men who find it really hard to text first characterize themselves as naturally shy or bad at flirting and small talk.
Why Do Some People Feel Confident Regardless of the Circumstances?
Most of our users (51%) who can text almost anybody consider themselves naturally sociable. They feel comfortable in their own skin and aren't afraid to communicate.
29% of men and 24% of women said they don't care what people think. That's why they are not afraid to press a 'send' button.
13% of our users have to text first a lot because they want a date that bad! Now that's what we call motivation!
Courage Is KEY
Hily found out that women who aren't afraid to text first have 35% more conversations in the app. For men, it's 20%.
So don't be afraid to put yourself out there and take initiative!
