There has been an uptick in young people using dating apps to score a bed to sleep in at night. Some may think this is creepy or sad but I say it is resourceful. This new “trend” is a sly way of hiding your homelessness. It makes you wonder how many people you meet on dating apps for a one night stand have a house or not, especially if you end up at your place. That’s the risk you take I suppose. Here is a real life story of a temporarily homeless aussie, he uses dating apps to his advantage while he is in between housing and keeps it very hush hush. His identity is covered in this article but he is quoted in saying,
“I didn’t want to be known as the homeless guy.”
“I felt very ashamed.”

This begs the question, why are there so many homeless people ages 15–24? I suppose the obvious answer is lack of funds to pay for rent. Minimum wage, even globally, is not enough to cover rent for a decent flat unless you have multiple roommates to split the cost. Could dating apps be bringing light to a social plague that needs fixing? Maybe one night stands are a quick and very temporary solution but the real change needs to be bigger. Higher wages or lower rent, with the reality that none of these are going to budge anytime soon we need to recognize some safety tips for online dating. When you hook-up with someone and they continually delay going to their house and suggest yours, something could be fishy. Keep safe and go with your gut to decide if your date is using you for your flat. Most of the time, they are not. But it is good to be aware of the latest trends such as this to key a safe eye on who you share your bed with.
